He later became a tic tac man – those hand-signaling masters of race meetings today – and a form student for a bookmaker. He also ran a bookmaking business at Sunderland’s dog racing track.
Then he took a gamble that more than paid off; becoming one of the first in the pre-internet age to have the SIS TV system put into his home.
Having live pictures and data, enabling him to create a video library and study form round the clock, greatly advantaged his sportsbook.
He went on to give fellow traders access to the same technology by creating an in running trading shop which remains in business today under different management.
