Staged at The Curragh racecourse the Irish 2,000 Guineas is a Group One class race for 3 year-olds only. Run over 1m the contest normally takes place each year in May and was first run in 1921.

Horses that contested the English 2,000 Guineas often go onto run in this race, while winners of the Irish 2,000 Guineas tend to take in the St James’s Palace Stakes, at Royal Ascot.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien has won four of the last 10 runnings, while in total, O’Brien has won the race a staggering 11 times.

JUICESTORM VERDICT: It really is impossible to not see the Godolphin-owned NATIVE TRAIL winning here. This 3 year-old Oasis Dream colt brings the best form to the table after a 3/4 of a length second in the English 2000 Guineas last month.

Slightly surprising is that the ‘boys in blue’ of Godolphin last landed the Irish 2000 Guineas back in 2005 with Dubawi – therefore, will be looking to end a 16 year winless run. While before that success they their only other victory came in 2000 (Bachir).

Prior to his second in the English 2000 Guineas, this Charlie Appleby-trained colt had won all five outings, including the Group One Dewhurst and National Stakes last season and with the last of those mentioned wins coming here at The Curragh racecourse, then we even though his track form is okay too. It really is difficult  to find any negative to take him on with.

Best Of The Others

With a monster 11 Irish 2000 Guineas victories then anything the Aidan O’Brien stable run has to be noted – they’ve just the one runner this year – Ivy League. But, this 3 year-old was last seen finishing second in the G3 Amethyst Stakes at Leopardstown 2 weeks ago and based on that effort – plus in this better race – you fell he’ll need to step up.

Trainer Jim Bolger laneed this prize 12 months ago and tries to follow-up – this time with Wexford Native , but is rated 19lbs inferior to Native Trail and was also beaten 4 lengths by another runner – BUCKAROO (e/w)  – here last time at the Curragh.

Buckaroo, looks to have a solid each-way chance though and is the main threat to the Godolphin horse. We know the track is fine and this Joseph O’Brien runner has also run well in Group One complany in the past when 4th in the Criterium de Saint Cloud in France last October. As mentioned, he can give Native Trail most to think about.

Finally, the only other UK runner in the field away from Native Trial is the Andrew Balding-trained Imperial Fighter  This 3 year-old has a small chance of picking up some prize money too after a close third in a Listed race at Newcastle last time.

He was also runner-up to this year’s 2000 Guineas winner – Coroebus – at HQ last October (beaten just 2 lengths) and was also just beaten just over 2 lengths in the G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes at Doncaster last season.
