JUICESTORM VERDICT: This Friday’s Epsom Oaks has been farmed since 2014 by the John Gosden and Aidan O’Brien stables – they’ve won ALL of the last eight runnings between them – and, if the betting is anything to go by, it will be a huge surprise if one of these yards isn’t winning the Epsom Oaks again in 2022.
O’Brien Has Four Epsom Oaks Entries
Trainer Aidan O’Brien has four horses entered in the 2022 Epsom Oaks – The Algarve, Thoughts Of June, Tuesday and Concert Hall – with the last two looking their better chances.
Concert Hall ran third last time out in the Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh and having won over 1m2f in her previous race looks well worth a go over this longer trip.
Tuesday also have some solid form – also running in the Irish 1000 Guineas (2nd) and before that was third in the English 1000 Guineas. Being by former Derby winner Galileo, she should also improve now moving up from a mile to 1m4f for the first time.
Emily Upjohn Epsom Oaks Market Leader
After winning all three of her starts, the John Gosden stable will be responsible for the Epsom Oaks favourite here – EMILY UPJOHN. She was a super-impressive winner of the Musidora Stakes at York last month (5 1/2 lengths) and certainly wasn’t stopping over that 1m 2 1/2f trip to suggest this longer distance will be fine.
Her sire is also the previous 2009 Epsom Derby winner – Sea The Stars – which also suggests she’ll be fine over this 1m4f trip.
With jockey Frankie Dettori, who has won the Epsom Oaks three times in the last five years, doing the steering she’ll also have plenty of experience in the saddle as Gosden looks for his fourth success in this race.
Gosden also has a useful second string horse in Nashwa, if Emily Upjohn doesn’t live up to her billing. This 3 year-old will also have Hollie Doyle riding, who is looking to become the first lady rider to win an English Classic.
The horse has won her last two in good fashion, with the last coming in a Listed race at Newbury over 1m2f – she’s certainly not without a chance.
Best Of The Others
The Godolphin stable last won the Epsom Oaks back in 2002 (Kazzia), so will be hoping their WITH THE MOONLIGHT (e/w) can put an end to that 19 year run without a win. She has a chance too – having bolted-up by just under 5 lengths last time in the Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket over 1m2f.
This well-bred Frankel filly should also improve for that last outing too as it came off a 183-day break and having run on strongly last time this 1m4f distance looks well worth a crack. Jockey William Buick gets the leg-up.
