This weekend sees the new season kick off in Spain with matches spread across four days. Two games take place on Friday evening with three Saturday, three Sunday and two on Monday evening. The big two both play on Sunday with Barcelona hosting Real Betis and Real Madrid facing a trip to North West Spain to take on Deportivo. As usual we will have a quiet start and look to the first few games to help us make decisions later on.
Friday 18th August 21.15 kick off Valencia v Las Palmas
I am very interested in watching this game as I have a good feeling about Valencia this season and they may be a team to keep onside. Of course this may change after viewing them for a couple of games and one of the big things about successful betting and trading is changing your opinion when you are wrong, not sticking with it through thick and thin. Back to this game and Las Palmas are probably not the opposition that Valencia would have wanted first up, but that does offer us opportunities to see how they have improved. Las Palmas won both fixtures last season by 3-1 at home and 4-2 away and in both games, came from behind. The latter was also the first game of the season and it is worth noting that Valencia lost their first four whilst Las Palmas won three of their first four. If we also add in that Las Palmas are unbeaten in pre-season then it makes it very difficult to justify backing the home team. As I think we may be looking at an open game I am going to look at trading a couple of correct scores on eth exchanges with a view to making a green book.
Correct Score – Valencia to win 2-1 and 3-1 for trading.
Saturday 19th August 17.15 kick off Celta de Vigo v Real Sociedad
For those of you who like sitting on the fence then this is probably the game for you. It looks to have draw written all over it and both teams would probably take that result before kick-off. Four of the last five head to head in Vigo ended level, three of them were 2-2. In eight of the last ten head to head both teams scored which is another angle into the game. There are a number of trading options to look at, you could trade correct scores 1-1 and 2-2, back the draw or bet both teams to score.
Preference is for Both Teams To Score @1.73 (8/11)
Monday 21st August 19.15 kick off Levante v Villarreal
A local derby and one in which Villarreal have had the better recently, winning on four of their last six visits to their near neighbours. They are fancied to challenge the top four by many this season, and this will be a test of their character, and they should oblige and they could be worth chancing at 2.20 (6/5). There has been no draw in this fixture in the last thirteen meetings today which is also a strong stat if you fancy the away side or you could look at Laying the draw. Villarreal ended the season strongly winning six of their last nine and had a confidence boosting win in a friendly against Cadiz last week. Newly promoted Levante will want a good start and would have preferred an easier task and this may be a losing star.
Villarreal to win @ 2.20 (6/5)
The other weekend fixtures are probably better watched and the only other stats that could remotely find us a bet are Sevilla v Espanyol who have had no draws in their last nine meetings today and Real Madrid away at Deportivo where they have won twelve of the last thirteen and all of the last eight meetings today. I will pass on both as Sevilla have a new manager and could take a couple of games to settle down and Real are without Ronaldo who will sit out five games after his red card. In my opinion the punishment, if it stands, is harsh, not because he shouldn’t be suspended, after all he is a huge role model for children, but I believe you will see an instance in most of this weekend’s La Liga games of players crowding round a referee and touching him with their hands to the same level that Ronaldo did. If they ban every player the same this weekend then fair enough, but that won’t happen and none will receive a red.
