Jerry Scott – Winning jockey of the first ever televised Grand National riding Merryman II in 1960talks about his winning ride despite having a broken collar bone in two places. He also tells of how he influenced the decision in 1971 making hard skull caps mandatory for all riders.
During his career Jerry also won the 1962 Hennessey Gold Cup and after retirement from riding spent 30 years as a Jockey Club starter and is the only man to have both won in the Grand National in 1960 then started the race 39 years later.
Great stuff. It’s good to hear a top jockey recalling big race triumphs of yesteryear. He later became a starter and is the only man to have both ridden a Grand National winner and started the race.
