Greyhound Racing — Rules Differences

Latest posts by Man of Mystery (see all)

In general I would strongly advise you not to try arbing greyhounds.

Unlike horse racing, greyhound racing has reserve dogs which run if there is a problem with one of the declared runners for the race. The rules on non runners differ from bookie to bookie. Therefore unless you are sure that the rules at the bookie are safe it is unwise to arb greyhounds, with the possible exception of big races like the greyhound derby final. In addition experience has shown that arbing greyhounds is an excellent way to get your account limited.

Betfair rules are:

Winner market. If a non-runner or reserve runner is declared, or the incorrect Greyhound runner name is displayed (excluding minor spelling mistakes), all bets matched on the race prior to the update of the market on Betfair will be void.

*From Mon 21st Dec 2009 Betfair will be changing the rule regarding incorrect dog names. They will now accept bets on the trap number, but the bets will still be voided if a reserve replaces one of the original dogs. Betfair’s statement about this rules change is reproduced in the post below.

Bookmakers have various rules for greyhound non runners which tend not to match Betfair, for example:

Ladbrokes rules:

If a greyhound is withdrawn from a race, bets placed prior to the withdrawal at Early/Show prices will be settled at S.P.

Stan James rules:

Bets on named greyhounds which do not run will be made void but if the trap number only is selected then the reserve will be substituted.

Although at first sight it looks like SJ rules for a named dog match Betfair, they don’t because if a dog that you did not bet on is withdrawn, your bet stands at SJ as far as I can see, but is void at Betfair.

New Betfair rules on Greyhound racing:

Betfair Customer Services 16 Dec 11:15

To date, our greyhound racing rules have required us to void all bets on a market if a dog name is listed beside the incorrect trap number. Although this is exceptionally rare, it has led to instances where a market has been voided after a race, notwithstanding the fact that customers will have placed their bets on the market in good faith and would expect those bets to stand.

Following a review of the rules we have decided that all bets (excluding those struck on ante-post and Australian licensed markets) will be settled on trap numbers. This means that a dog name will be provided for information purposes only. This change will go live from next Monday, 21 December.

For the avoidance of doubt, please be aware that notwithstanding the rule change described above, if a reserve runner replaces a non-runner, all bets struck up to this point will continue to be void.

Bet365 rules on Greyhound racing (for those doing the Bet365 offer):

If a reserve dog runs the following settlement rules apply: If a trap number is selected and a reserve runs then bets on the trap number will be settled on the reserve at SP. Bets on all other dogs in the race where a price was taken before the reserve was announced will be settled at SP. If a named dog (‘No reserves’) is selected and a reserve runs in place of the named dog then the bet will be settled as a Non-Runner. Where a price is taken then bets on named dogs placed prior to withdrawal in a race where a reserve runs from a different trap will be settled at SP.

Payment will be made on the official result of races. Bets will be void in the event of no Starting Price being returned. bet365 reserves the right to declare void any bets where it considers there to be reasonable suspicion or evidence of unfair price manipulation.

When a race is re-run all bets stand. However, where a Price has been taken, settlement will be at the Starting Price returned on the re-run. Should a race be declared void and not re-run then all selections will be treated as Non-Runners.

In the event of abandonment or postponement to races where Early Prices have been offered, all bets will stand as long as the races are re and completed. However bets where a Price has been taken will be settled at the Starting Price, should a Non Runner, in the specified race, be declared.
