2019 Cheltenham Festival – How Many Irish-Trained Winners?
With the presence of the Irish-trained horses increasing by the year at the Cheltenham Festival then ‘How Many Irish Trained Winners’ is another popular market in the build-up, and even in-play during the four-days action.
Irish-trained runners, and those stabled in Britain, fight it out each year over the four days for the Prestbury Cup. Whoever wins the most races takes the prize, a draw (14-14) and the honours are shared – it’s as simple as that!
If we look back over recent festivals, we’ll see that in 2013 the Irish had a record 14 winners from the 27 races (52%), while in 2014 they weren’t far behind with 12 Cheltenham Festival successes, while in 2015 and 2016 they fired in 13 winners each year.
In 2018 it was pretty much more of the same too as the Irish-trained horses landed 17 of the 28 races, with the British runners grabbing 11.
Therefore, with another very strong team of runners heading over the Irish Sea to Prestbury Park in 2019, then it’s easy to see why the bookies have the Irish as the clear favourites to out-score the British-trained runners again.
The Betting: Before the 2019 Cheltenham Festival, Ireland are around 4/6 and GB 7/4, with the draw 7/1 (odds subject to change).
This is backed-up when looking at the ‘Top Cheltenham Trainers Betting’ as two of the main three in the market are Irish. Gordon Elliott, who was the top trainer at the Festival for the second time in 2018, will be sending over another huge team, while the same can be said for the Willie Mullins camp. Add in a strong team from the Irish-based Jessie Harrington, plus Henry de Bromhead yards then the depth in Ireland’s runners this year looks just as good as ever!
Yes, Nicky Henderson might have something to say about that with the likes of Altior, Buveur D’Air in his yard, and the Paul Nicholls camp seem to have a few new superstars in the making, most notably their recent King George VI Chase winner, Clan Des Obeaux, but with Mullins firing in 7 winners in 2018 and Elliott 8, they’ve still a fair bit of ground to make up on the Irish pair.

80% of private investors trade the wrong way and that is why they lose money trading. Worse still, they spend thousands with “teachers” – mostly charlatans who have been sacked, failed in finance or are just internet marketers.
If anyone wants to learn to trade, then speak to someone who is legally responsible for managing other people’s money. And has been doing it, profitably, for a very long time.
