2,000 guineas trends and tips for the 2022 running

Andy

The Qipco-sponsored 2,000 Guineas is a race run over 1m and is the first of the five English Classics to be run each season – with the 1,000 Guineas run the following day. Both races are staged at Newmarket racecourse, and for 3 year-olds only, the race is also seen as an early-season guide to that year’s Epsom Derby – the last horses to land both races in the same season were Sea The Stars (2009) and Camelot (2012).

Here at JuiceStorm we take a look back at past winners and highlights the key trends and stats ahead of the 2022 renewal – this year run on Saturday 30th April 2022

Key 2,000 Guineas Stat – 12 of the last 20 2,000 Guineas winners came from the top 3 in the betting?

Other 2,000 Guineas Facts

– Aidan O’Brien has won the race in 1998, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2018 & 2019
– Frankie Dettori rode the winner in 1996, 1999 & 2016

JUICESTORM VERDICT: The Aidan O’Brien yard has landed the 2000 Guineas a staggering 10 times, so his entries are always respected – he has Point Lonsdale (Frankie Dettori) and Luxembourg  (Ryan Moore) this year and both have big says.

Jockey Ryan Moore would have had the choice of the O’Brien entires  – so, the fact he’s picked Luxembourg indicates this unbeaten Camelot colt is their better fancied. He was last out when winning the Vertum Futurity Trophy Stakes at Doncaster back in October – a contest that’s often a good guide to the 2000 Guineas. He also holds an Epsom Derby entry for later this season.

However, the one that all the other horses have to strive to beat looks to be the Godolphin-owned NATIVE TRAIL who comes here as the top-rated and has won all five of his races. He was last in action winning the Craven Stakes here this month – winning by 3 1/2 lengths – so, the track will pose no issues.

Before that win, he took the Group One Dewhurst Stakes last season – a race that 4 of the last 20 2000 Guineas winners also took – and has so far won 4 of his 5 starts by 2 or more lengths. Jockey William Buick gets the leg up and he comes from the in-form Charlie Appleby stable that have a 29% strike-rate with their 3 year-olds at the course.

Other 2000 Guineas Runners To Note

Godolphin also have a live support chance with Coroebus who is also a course and distance winner at the course after winning the Autumn Stakes here last October – he’s also trained by Charlie Appleby.

But, the two at bigger prices that catch the eye are PERFECT POWER and BOUNDLESS OCEAN (e/w).  The former was a nice winner last time at Newbury in the Greenham Stakes and will come here race fit from that victory and jockey Christophe Soumillion has made no secret that he thinks the horse is useful

Boundless Ocean could also go well at a fair price, being trained by Jim Bolger, who won this race 12 months ago. He was a good winner last time at Leopardstown over 1m2f so connections are sure to make full use of that proven stamina now dropped back to a mile.
