Horse Racing – Everything you need to know about Rule 4

The most important thing to understand when matched betting or arbing on horse racing is rule 4. This causes more trouble and worry to inexperienced arbers than anything else, and yet problems can usually be avoided.

Rule 4 may be implemented by the bookmakers if a horse is withdrawn after they compiled the odds which you bet at. There is a concise explanation of why along with the standard table of deductions in this post.

I strongly advise you print out a hard copy of this table and keep it handy.

Stake Returned (SR) Free Bets

Risk Category A – risk free
Stake Returned free bets are the simplest form of free bet, but unfortunately are extremely rare except when attached to a wager requirement. They usually appear as an account credit, which may be in a separate bonus balance pending release after completion of the WR. When the bet is placed it behaves exactly as though it has used your own money.
Any odds can be used for these (subject to the free bet T&Cs which may state a minimum), although lower odds tie up less of your money. They are matched out exactly like a qualifying bet and returns of 100% or more of the free money can be achieved if you can find an arb.
There are various calculators and spreadsheets which enable you to calculate how much to lay for an equal profit both ways. Most have options for SR and SNR free bets and can also be used for the qualifiers. The one I use is the “matcher” spreadsheet, which is very simple…

Underlaying and Overlaying

One of the things that seems to cause confusion is the concept of underlaying and overlaying. In general when you match out a qualifying bet you will match it so that you win or lose exactly the same amount regardless of the outcome. You then place your SNR free bet, doing exactly the same but using a different calculation in the spreadsheet because it is SNR. What you are in fact doing is calculating the optimum underlay for the SNR free bet to to give you an equal profit either way. However there are circumstances when underlaying to win more if the bet wins at the bookie makes sense.

Strategies for If Offers

Explanation and strategies for if offers:

[arrowlist]

IF Strategy – offers which can be matched for a guaranteed profit
If Something Loses – Offers where you need to back the if event at Betfair.
ARBING strategy – offers which have no if market at Betfair.

[/arrowlist]

All if offers are Risk category B – low risk if you can find suitable odds.
If offers seem to cause a huge amount of confusion, which is a pity as they are probably the commonest offers for existing customers.
